HINTS & TIPS

  • USE ALL THE LINKS - It has taken us some time to put together all of the links for home insurance. Make sure you are getting the best deal possible by using all of the links that apply to the cover you require. The majority of the insurers listed below do not appear on comparison sites - but just to make sure, at the foot of the page we've given you links to them too. OK, it might take you a few minutes getting quotes from them all, but you're here to save money aren't you? Don't forget to look at the navigation panel above for more specialist policies like landlords insurance, and cover for your individual gadgets and gizmos.
  • BUILDINGS OR CONTENTS? - You will usually save money by having both covered under one policy, but if you are not the homeowner you won't need buildings insurance as this will be the landlord's responsibility. So, what will be classed as 'contents' and what will be classed as 'buildings?' Basically, if you think of anything that is permanently fixed to the house (will not 'fall out' if you were able to pick your home up & turn it upside down) then these are classed as part of the buildings section of your policy (ie. sinks,  baths, kitchen units, toilets). Anything else is gernerally classed as contents.
  • HOW MUCH SHOULD I INSURE FOR? - Buildings policies are based on the rebuilding cost of your property, NOT it's value. This is because the saleable value of your home includes the land, which cannot be stolen or burn away in a fire! If you have mortgaged recently then your mortgage company will advise you of the rebuilding cost of your home. If not, your mortgage company should be able to advise you anyway. Many insurance policies nowadays cover you for a blanket sum insured (ie. up to £500,000) to make sure your cover is adequate, and you will not fall into the pitfalls of underinsurance. Contents policies are based on a 'new for old' basis. That means that your 5 year old TV set will be covered for the cost of a new one. Go into each room and tot up the approximate cost of replacing each item with a new one. The standard sums insured for home contents are around £30,000 to £40,000 - but again sum insurers are offering 'blanket sums insured'.

Tesco offer a 'value' home insurance policy which is cheaper than their 'standard' or 'finest' policy because it excludes cover you might not necessarily need. You can get quotes for all schemes by clicking their link below, enabling you to compare the cover and the premiums.
