Car Insurance for Northern Ireland residents.
HINTS & TIPS
- USE ALL THE LINKS - We have painstakingly searched through the Northern Ireland motor insurance market to get you links to as many insurers as possible - more than all of the comparison sites put together! The majority of the insurers listed below do not appear on comparison sites - but just to make sure, at the foot of the page we've given you links to them too. OK, so it might take you some time going through them all, but you're here to save money aren't you?
- COVER TYPE - The majority of insurer's minimum cover is 'third party fire & theft'. Therefore, do not assume that 'third party only' policies are cheaper, as there are far less quotes to choose from and you're restricting your market choice. Likewise, some insurers only offer comprehensive car insurance, and some have a large 'age of car' discount built in to their rates for older cars (particularly for drivers over 25). So, your cheapest option may be comprehensive, even though third party only cover is adequate for your requirements. On the other hand, if your car is not worth a huge amount of money, consider third party fire & theft instead of comprehensive.
- DRIVERS - Some insurers give a larger discount for 'insured and spouse' than for 'insured only' to drive. Even if your spouse is unlikely to drive your car, get a quote with him/her named as a driver as this could reduce your premium! If you are a young driver, try adding a more experienced person as a named driver (parent?) as this could also save you money. Remember, if they're named on the policy they don't have to drive the car!
- EXCESS - The vast majority of companies have a 'compulsory excess' built in to their policy, normally £100.00. This is the amount YOU contribute towards a claim. You can reduce your premium by opting for a 'voluntary excess' which is added to the compulsory excess. You can buy a completely seperate 'Excess Protection' policy for almost definitely less than the difference between quotes with and without a voluntary excess. In other words, you can save money on your premium, but end up paying ZERO EXCESS if you do have a claim!
- LEGAL COVER - All insurers will try to tempt you into taking their 'Legal Cover', or 'Motor Legal Protection' and some are charging over £35.00 for this add-on. It can prove to be invaluable if you do have a non-fault accident, but there is absolutely no need to purchase it with your motor insurance. We offer this cover completely free to all site visitors, whether you end up buying a policy via a link from this site or not! Click here for more information.
- DON'T CHEAT! - You might save some money by not declaring your accidents, convictions, modifications or other material facts, but if you do this the chances are if you do need to make a claim the insurer will either back out completely, or ask for an additional premium. Tell the truth!
- COME BACK & VISIT! - Don't assume that because you've found the cheapest deal this year that this will be cheapest next time around. Bookmark this site and return again next year to check the market again at renewal, as insurers do fluctuate their premiums from year to year, and we'll almost certainly have new/different links for you.
