Motor Excess Protection

Almost all motor insurance policies bought in the UK have a compulsory excess. This is your contribution towards the total cost of the claim to your insurer. If you are under 25, have a provisional licence, or have held your full licence for less than a year, the chances are you are liable to a minimum excess of £250 should you need to make a claim. In the event of a claim, you must add both voluntary (an additional excess which you agree to when purchasing your insurance in exchange for a reduction in premium) and compulsory excesses together.

You can now purchase a Motor Excess Protection policy enabling you to recover any excess you may be liable for.

HINTS & TIPS

  • USE ALL OF THE LINKS - This type of insurance policy is relatively new to the UK, and hence there are not many providers at present. We will continue to add new providers as and when they enter the market.
  • KNOW YOUR EXCESS - Make sure you are aware of the total excess you will be asked to pay if you do have a claim. As mentioned above, most insurers have 'compulsory' excesses, which are then added to any voluntary excess you wish to opt for in exchange for a lower premium. Excesses may also differ between types of claim - look for 'Accidental Damage' excess for accidents, 'Fire & Theft' excess for fire or theft claims, and 'Windscreen Excess' for glass breakage (most Motor Excess Protection policies do not cover windscreen excesses).
  • CAN YOU AFFORD IT? - Having worked out what you are going to have to pay in the event of a claim, can you afford not to cover it, just in case? Some policy excesses are routinely over £250.00 in total. Do you have that amount of cash lying around in case you need it following an accident, fire or theft? If not, you should consider purchasing a Motor Excess Protection policy NOW!
  • SAVE ON YOUR MOTOR INSURANCE PREMIUM - By selecting a 'voluntary' excess on your motor insurance, you will obtain a lower premium than one with no voluntary excess. The premium saving you will make will almost certainly be more than the cost of a Motor Excess Protection policy - so you can actually end up with a lower insurance premium, yet have a low (or even zero) excess if you do have to make a claim! For example: Van insurance premium with no voluntary excess: £600. Car insurance premium with £400 voluntary excess (and £100 compulsory, so £500 excess in total): £450. Premium saving: £150. Cost of £500 Motor Excess Protection policy: less than £60 - saving you £90 on your overall premium, but effectively ending up with zero excess!
